“Unfortunately for him, the rules do not allow” – McLaren F1 boss Andreas Seidl has poured cold waters on Carlos Sainz’s hope of testing for Ferrari in the Young Drivers’ Test.
The FIA allowing Fernando Alonso to take part in the Young Drivers’ Test for Renault has opened a pandora’s box for other drivers pitching in their reason for being allowed to participate. For those unaware, Alonso has been allowed on account of a rule tweak that allows racers who did not compete this season to participate. McLaren’s Carlos Sainz, who will switch to Ferrari next season, wants to test for his new team.
“I don’t see why the FIA wouldn’t maybe open the hand a bit also to other drivers.”

McLaren unwilling to permit Carlos Sainz to test for Ferrari
But the Spaniard’s current boss has poured cold waters on his hopes. McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl has suggested that according to the rules, he will not be allowed to participate. This is the same reason why their new driver Daniel Ricciardo will not be participating. As a result, McLaren is not going to be a part of the YDT at all.
“The regulations are clear, so I don’t see any way that Carlos is driving the car. There is no room for him to drive a Ferrari because, unfortunately for him, the rules do not allow it.”
“It’s a young driver test.”
“For us, it’s clear that based on the regulations that exist we can’t run there with an active F1 driver and that is why we made the decision together with all the other teams already in April that we don’t take part in this test.”
