A Virat Kohli fan attempted suicide after Virat’s 5 run innings in the first Test against South Africa
In a shocking incident that took place in Madhya Pradesh on the 5th of January, Babu Bairva, a die-hard Virat Kohli fanatic tried to set himself on fire after Kohli was dismissed for just 5 runs in the first innings.
Bairva, who lives in the Ratlam district in Madhya Pradesh, was watching the match alone in his room, hoping that Virat Kohli could overcome his overseas demons and help India go in just 2 down at the end of an eventful first day in Cape Town.
Virat Kohli though couldn’t quite keep the swinging(and seaming) ball away, nicking off to Morne Morkel in the dying minutes of the first Test.
While the whole of India grimaced in agony, Bairva took his disappointment to another level, pouring kerosene on himself and then setting himself on fire.
The family members and neighbours rushed in as soon as they heard Bairva’s cries, putting off the fire and taking Bairva to the hospital.
Bairva, who is in now in stable condition, did sustain burns on his face, head and hands.
“The man in his statement accepted that he was too upset with the dismissal of Virat Kohli and set himself ablaze,” a sub-inspector told News18.
“During the probe, we found no other reason which could have driven Bairva to this extreme step,” he added.
While sport fans are an emotional breed, they need to draw a line somewhere with respect to their fandom for their favourite team/sportsperson.
Virat Kohli is currently playing in the 1st Test against South Africa with India hoping to pull off an unlikely win.
