Indian captain Virat Kohli finally opened up during the pre-departure press conference for West Indies, on the continuous set of reports of alleged rift between him and opening batsman Rohit Sharma ever since India’s semi-final exit from the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
It is worth mentioning that a BCCI official had a day before confirmed that Kohli would not be holding a press conference before the tour of West Indies, thereby inviting further speculations on the aforementioned reports.
But, against the reports, the 30-year-old did attend the press conference at Mumbai on Monday, and passed a massive statement on the rift reports.
What did Kohli comment?
Terming the reports of rift as ‘baffling’, Kohli commenced with his reply giving an insight as to how he is as a person. “I’ll tell you something about myself. If I don’t like a person, or if I’m insecure of a person, you will see that on my face, or in my behaviour towards that person. That’s how simple it is”, commented Kohli.
“I’ve always praised Rohit whenever I’ve had an opportunity because I believe he is that good. We have had no issues, Kohli further added.
“It’s baffling, I don’t know who is benefiting from all of this”- Kohli
Speaking to the media, the captain made it clear that there is no rift within the team and called the rumours as “baffling”.
“In my opinion, it’s baffling and ridiculous to read such stuff. Public talk about how well we’ve played, and here we’re feeding lies and talking about negative things,” Kohli said.
He further added that his team has worked hard from bringing the team from 7 to 1 (in the rankings). And even after all of this, after four years people are talking about something that is not even there.
“You work hard for four years to bring a team down from seven to one, and after four years what are we talking about! We have to reflect as cricketers, I’m sure that every one of us can take a step like are we really creating something that’s not out there. Because within the team as I said, it’s for everyone to see what kind of camaraderie we share. You can’t play with that kind of passion if people don’t get along with each other. It’s as simple as that.
Kohli, has perhaps shut down all the reports of an alleged rift once and for all, with the aforementioned set of statements.
