What’s the story behind Virender Sehwag’s tweet?
Virender Sehwag brought the social media alive. He posted a tweet which said, “Bat me hai Dum! #BharatJaisiJagahNahi.” Henceforth, this made people believe that his tweet was in reaction to Gurmehar Kaur’s recent stand. She has been battling the students’ group, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Gurmehar, a martyr’s daughter has been in the limelight for posting a few snaps about India and Pakistan. Recently, she showed her displeasure at the right wing ABVP disrupting the lecture by Umar Khalid at Delhi University. Umar Khalid was one of the people who was detained on charges of sedition last year.
Gurmehar Kaur took to the social media trying to take a stand for what she is feels is right. Also, she tried to garner widespread support from the students fighting against the violence in the university. However, repercussions soon followed with several people poking fun at her. Moreover, she was also labelled as an anti-nationalist.
Reaction to Virender Sehwag’s tweet
The moment Viru posted his tweet, people insinuated that he was taking a side in this matter. Hence, this drew mixed responses from the public. Some of them lauded Virender Sehwag for taking a definite stand in this controversy. However, a few of them did not mince words and criticized the cricketer for his apathy and indifference.
Interestingly, he received support from star actor Randeep Hooda among a barrage of brickbats from the public. Therefore, seeing how ambiguous the tweet was from Virender Sehwag, it is definitely questionable if it warranted such a massive controversy!
