Virgil Van Dijk showed Erling Haaland why he’s the best defender in the world during Salzburg vs Liverpool

Virgil Van Dijk showed Erling Haaland why he’s the best defender in the world during Salzburg vs Liverpool in the Champions League.

Liverpool secured their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League following a 2-0 win over RB Salzburg in their final group stage match. A loss would have sent Salzburg to the Champions League at the expense of the reigning champions, who would have dropped down to the Europa League instead.

Salzburg’s prolific striker, Erling Haaland was confident that his side would be able to overcome Liverpool. He went so far as to claim that they would win 3-1 with him scoring all 3 goals. His faith in his own and his side’s ability came with good reason.

Salzburg were unbeaten at home for 3 years while Haaland himself, had scored 28 goals in 21 matches prior to the fixture, including 8 in the Champions league alone. Unfortunately for him, Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah scored minutes apart to end their Champions League hopes.

Haaland himself had a disappointing showing and went goalless in the match. He was seen throwing a bottle of water to the ground after Salah scored Liverpool’s second goal and found himself substituted 15 minutes before full time.

There is no doubt that Haaland could one day become one of the best strikers in the world. However, he still has a lot to learn and develop. Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk made this very clear to the teenager when he came from behind to rob Haaland of the ball when he looked clear to take a run at goal.

Van Dijk bossed the teenager and showed why he is considered the best defender in the world right now. Haaland was no match for the Dutchman’s strength and pace. Liverpool’s victory ensured that they topped their group while Haaland was left to eat humble pies from the bench.
