Ben Stokes plays a scintillating switch hit off Yuzvendra Chahal to send the ball into the stands during Eng vs Ind World Cup match

During the 38th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between England and India at Edgbaston, English all-rounder Ben Stokes pulled-off a breathtaking switch-hit to send the ball sailing into the stands of Birmingham.

It all happened in the fourth ball of the 40th over. India’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who bowled his worst career figures in ODIs (10-0-88-0) was all over the place as the English batsmen (particularly Jonny Bairstow) made full use of the relatively shorter boundaries. The English openers in fact stitched together a 160-run stand in only 22.1 overs to lay a perfect platform for the ever-charged English fireworks.

Making full use of the aforementioned platform, Ben Stokes pummelled a breathtaking switch hit off the leg-spinner.

How did he execute the Switch-hit?

Chahal bowled a tossed-up flighted delivery to Stokes, who had premeditated to play the reverse sweep. The ball did not land at the perfect area for him to execute the shot to perfection, but he somehow got himself into an unbelievably awkward position to pull off the Switch hit to perfection, to hit it for a maximum. Everybody present in the stands, watched the shot and the replays over and over again in bewilderment. Such was the aura of the shot.

With this shot, and many others, Stokes smashed a total of 79 runs off 54 balls, with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes. He in fact was instrumental in boosting the English total to 337/7 after 50 overs.

From India’s point of view, Mohammad Shami picked up a five-wicket haul, to end up with figures of 10-1-69-5. Both the Indian wrist spinners- Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal collectively went for 160 runs in 20 overs, picking up just a one wicket.
