On this day in 2014, there was a deafening silence in the cricket world, echoing all through the world, as Phil Hughes passed away due to a head injury that he had suffered in a domestic match.

Sean Abbott’s bouncer had hit Hughesy on the head, and he had immediately collapsed to the ground. A day long battle in the hospital could not save Hughesy and the entire cricketing fraternity mourned the death of one of the most promising cricketers of the present generation.

The Australian cricketers were shaken, as they had witnessed a fellow team mate die in the most unfortunate  of circumstances. And ever since then, they have always made it a point to pay tribute to Phil Hughes whenever possible.

One such incident took place today, when David Warner was batting on 60 and tucked a ball to the mid-wicket region. He immediately took off for 3, and ended up on the non-strikers end with 63* next to his name, the same score Phil Hughes was on when he was hit by that bouncer.

David Warner then looked to the skies, paying tribute to his good old mate!

Australia today wrapped up the first test, with some ease in the end, as the English bowlers just couldn’t get through the stellar opening partnership between Warner and Bancroft.

Joe Root conceded in the post match presentation that Steve Smith’s innings was the difference between the two sides, as apart from that England were very much in the game.

The second Ashes test starts on the 2nd of December, and England would welcome Ben Stokes back for the test match, who was suspended by the ECB for the 1st Test
