Diego Simeone celebrates wildly

Fans were eagerly waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo’s clash against stubborn Atletico Madrid’s defence, but he was totally nullified in their 2-0 defeat to Diego Simeone’s side at Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

The hosts were clearly the better side in the first half but failed to take their chances. However, they create tons of chances in the second part of the game to go ahead in the game. Just moments after the referee blew the whistle for the second half, Diego Costa had an excellent chance to lead the game, but he sliced the ball in a one-v-one situation.

Two minutes later Antonie Griezmann tried to loop the ball over Wojciech Szczesny, but the Polish shot-stopper was alert and got a fingertip to divert it to the crossbar before Juventus’ Skipper Chiellini cleared the ball away. They kept on banging on the door of Juventus’ defence and eventually got the lead when Jose Maria Gimenez had to tap the ball from close range in the 78th minutes.

Atletico Madrid looked a severe threat from the set pieces and added their second for the night when Diego Godin scored from an acute angle to take a two-goal cushion to Allianz Stadium in the reverse fixture which will be played on March 12th.

Their defence saw out the rest of the game and made sure that the Old Lady did not nick an away goal from this tie.

After the ball had gone inside the net for the second time, Diego Simeone went berserk and celebrated wildly in a manner which would have infuriated the Juventus fans.

Before Gimenez scored the opener, there was a huge altercation when the referee decided to overturn the decision to Juventus’ favour. Alvaro Morata headed the ball from inside the six-yard box, but he just tried to unsettle Giorgio Chiellini before finding the back of the net. Even though the officiate ruled out the goal, commentators kept on saying that the Old Lady got lucky with that particular decision.

Fans decided to make fun of that decision by using Diego Simeone’s celebration last night.

In the post-match press conference, Diego Simeone said that the celebration came from his heart and he did not intend to offend others.

Speaking to the media, the Argentine said “It’s not a nice gesture, I admit, but I felt the need to do it,”

“I did it as a player at Lazio and I did it again to show our fans that we have cojones. I can only apologise if anyone was offended.”

“It wasn’t aimed at the other team, I was turning towards our own supporters,”

“There are many things that can be won in football, but what will always remain are the memories of playing in a competitive team and that is the most healthy and beautiful thing that can happen to an athlete.” Simeone said.
