Cristiano Ronaldo has now won his fifth Ballon d’Or tying Lionel Messi for the most number of Ballon d’Or wins by a single player.

There isn’t much you can say about the Ronaldo-Messi rivalry that has not been said over the last decade. These two footballing gods have taken the game to new heights and have re-written records that many thought were unbreakable.

Both Ronaldo and Messi are icons of their respective clubs and countries and have gone on to define an era in football. After making the Ballon d’Or an individual battle over the last ten years, we are no closer to definitively calling one player better than the other.

With both players having won the title five times each, football fans all over should stop comparing and just enjoy this incredible pair for the rest of their playing career.

After winning his fifth Ballon d’Or, Ronaldo spoke about his long term rival and expressed his admiration of the Argentine.

“I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

“This year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League.

“Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.

“I hope to play at this level for a few more years, I hope the battle with Messi continues, things happen for a reason.

“I feel good this season and we’ll see what we win at the end of the year.”

“Neymar has a lot of talent, a lot of potential, and I’m sure he’ll have some chance to win in the future.”
