Watch: Ryan Shawcross suffers freakish ankle injury in a pre-season friendly against Leicester city right before the onset of a new season.
What is with 2019 and injuries? The pre-season has already claimed one too many players already and you can now add Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross to that list. The Potters took on Leicester City in their last pre-season friendly before the Championship season begins. However, they will now have to go forward without their skipper.

Shawcross suffered the freakish injury just before half-time. The centre back landed awkwardly on his left ankle while performing a slide tackle in order to clear the ball. Doing so however, saw the Englishman twist his ankle quite painfully.
The former Manchester United player immediately waved his arms in agony while his teammates rushed to check on their captain. The game then saw a 5-minute delay while the physios and paramedics attended to him. He was eventually taken off the ground on a stretcher. In a touching gesture, he received a standing ovation from both sets of supporters in the ground.
We hope you get well soon, Ryan. https://t.co/prGTakcKSG

Looks very painful for Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross here. The way his ankle twists. Gerry Taggart’s reaction on commentary says it all #scfc pic.twitter.com/3oAuvuXQYy

There is no update on how long will it take for him to recover. There are fears however, that he could miss out the entire campaign.
Ryan Shawcross began his career at Manchester United. He joined Stoke City on a loan in 2007 after which they signed him permanently. Shawcross was handed the captaincy of the side ahead of the 2010-2011 season and has captained the team ever since.
Under his captaincy, they reached the 2011 FA Cup Final, finishing runners-up to Manchester City. The run to the final also meant that Stoke entered the UEFA Europa League in 2011–12. They reached the round of 32 losing to Spanish team Valencia.
