Ilkay Gundogan on his missed penalty : The midfielder made up for his miss with two goals on the day
As Liverpool and Manchester City both approached their showdown with each other tentatively on Sunday, it looked like this one could end up with neither side breaking the deadlock on the day.
A scrappy affair, the fixture finally saw its first real chance be created as Manchester City earned a penalty in the first half. With Fabinho impeding Raheem Sterling, City were rightfully given a penalty, one which looked set to put the side into a crucial 1-0 lead on the day.
However, the side’s penalty woes continues unabated as new taker, Ilkay Gundogan ended up sending his effort right into the concourses. It was City’s second penalty miss against Liverpool this season with Kevin de Bruyne having previously missed when the sides met earlier.
While the penalty miss didn’t cost City as they ran rings around Liverpool to clobber them 4-1 on the night, the side’s form when asked to convert penalties does make for worrisome reading. The club has missed thrice this term with the team yearning for a proper taker.
Gundogan Mocks His Effort
However, Ilkay Gundogan managed to find the funny side of his howler of an effort. Ensuing the match in which he scored twice, Gundogan likened his penalty to a field shot.
“When they tell you it’s #SuperBowl and a Field Goal is worth 3 points…,” Gundogan wrote on Twitter.

Pep Hints At Handing Ederson The Job
“It is a huge victory for us,” said the Manchester City manager. “We had to suffer. It is three more points but I take into consideration the fact that we won after we missed a penalty and conceded a goal. It was the way we reacted that made the difference.
“I have a lot of emotions. Missing a penalty against Liverpool is routine for us and perhaps we should consider Ederson as a penalty-taker.
“In February, no-one is champions but for Manchester City to come here and finally win is very important.”
