Having said that, nothing of that sort happened. The showpiece event will go down as a balanced tournament especially when it comes to one department dominating the other. A prime example of bowlers dominating the tournament can be judged from the fact that Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc’s record-breaking numbers.

Having picked 27 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 18.59, an economy rate of 5.43 and a strike rate of 20.5, Starc is the highest-wicket taker in the tournament. When Starc dismissed England opening batsman Jonny Bairstow in the second semi-final, he became the bowler to pick 27 wickets in a World Cup.

A major overall World Cup record lies in the age of World Cup winning captains. The previous 11 editions of the World Cup have seen nine captains lifting the trophy. Only West Indies’ Clive Lloyd (1975 and 1979) and Australia’s Ricky Ponting (2003 and 2007) are the two captains who have won the World Cup twice as captains of their team.

While Lloyd was aged 31 and 35 while leading West Indies to title victories, Ponting was 28 and 33 when he led Australia to their third and fourth World Cup title respectively.

The oldest captain to win a World Cup for his team is Pakistan’s Imran Khan (1992). The current Pakistani Prime Minister was 40-year old when Pakistan beat England in the final of the 1992 World Cup.

While the average age of World Cup winning captains is 31.90, India’s Kapil Dev is till date the youngest captain to win the World Cup. Dev was only 24-year old when he led India to a victory against the mighty West Indies in 1983.
