“It was so bad on so many levels”- The Undertaker opens up on working with Giant Gonzales

“It was so bad on so many levels”- The Undertaker opens up on working with Giant Gonzales. The pair squared up at Wrestlemania 9.

WWE legend, the Undertaker was never truly the top guy. However, he was one of the cornerstones of the company’s success across eras. He was most notable for his 21-match win streak at the Wrestlemania with some of those matches etched in history as classics. His match against Giant Gonzales however, was not one of those.

The Deadman’s match against Gonzales at Wrestlemania 9 was arguably his worst match at the show of shows. In fact, he revealed that the feud between the two took years off his career due to the stress he felt with having to work with him.

“I got a taste of Giant Gonzales when we were in WCW together,” The Undertaker said in an interview with the Not Sam Podcast. “I think that might have been another reason that I left, because they were trying to get me in a program down there. Fur patches. Oh my, that was the worst. Hideous. It was so bad on so many levels.’

“That whole thing took years off my career. I would be in much better shape now if I could have skipped that one program. As physically demanding as it was, it was twice the mental strain because you got Bret’s there, now Yoko is there. All these guys are going out and having these great matches, and obviously you want to be mentioned in the same breath with those guys, and it was just not possible.’

“It was survival every night, just trying to figure out what he could do and at that time, I didn’t sell a lot and bump around, but man, I was flopping and just trying to make chicken salad out of chicken crap. It did help me and it prepared me later on to be able to work with people, but I still sometimes wake up with cold sweats.”

Their feud began at the Royal Rumble. They first fought at Wrestlemania with Undertaker picking up a win through disqualification. The storyline culminated at SummerSlam with the Undertaker picking up another win.

Gonzales was let go a couple of months later at the expiration of his contract.

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
