For long Reigns has been given the John Cena treatment. He rose to fame during his stint as a heel. However, once he switched over to being a face, the WWE stubbornly refused to turn despite his character going stale. So what changed and why has the WWE finally budged?

Real reason why Roman Reigns turned heel

According to PWInsider, the WWE want to position Roman Reigns as the top heel on SmackDown. Another report from WrestlingNews.co claims that heel Reigns will dethrone Bray Wyatt just a week after he won the Universal Championship. The two will then feud for the title over the next couple of months.

Interestingly, PWInsider have also reported that with Braun Strowman turning heel in recent weeks, Bray Wyatt will take over from Reigns as the top baby face of the brand. This is a change of dynamics not many saw coming and will surely freshen the product.

The idea here is that a change in character will ultimately lead to Reigns getting cheered by the fans. Vince McMahon is said to have come to a realization hat they couldn’t do the same thing they’ve been doing for years with Reigns so that is why the decision was made to turn him heel.

All three of these men will face each other in a triple threat this Sunday at WWE Payback for the Universal Championship in a No Holds Barred Triple Threat match.
