Kurt Angle says he was the original choice over Chris Jericho for the WWE Undisputed Championship. In the end, Vince McMahon decided to go with Jericho instead.
Back in 2001, WWE featured three title matches on their Vengeance pay per view. Stone Cold took on Kurt Angle for the WWF Championship and the Rock faced Chris Jericho for the World Championship. The winners of both matches would face each other to unify the titles.

As we all know by now, Jericho beat both the Rock and Stone Cold to become WWE’s first Undisputed Champion. However, according to Angle, the accolade was orignally meant for him. Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, the Olympic Gold Medalist revealed that Vince McMahon changed his mind a week before the pay per view.
Kurt Angle says he was the original choice over Chris Jericho for the WWE Undisputed Championship
“I was actually set to win the title but Vince McMahon came to me about a week before and said ‘Hey, I’m not going to put the title on you, I’m going to put it on Jericho because he’s red hot right now, he’s working his way up and he needs this title more than you.’ I agreed with Vince, I said ‘You’re absolutely right, I’d put [the titles] on Jericho too if I were you.’
“There was consideration for me to win the title, but I think Vince went with Jericho because Jericho needed it more and Chris was a red hot baby face at the time. Giving him that title just legitimized him even more, he deserved it.”
Jericho held on to the Championship until Wrestlemania X8, where he fought Triple H in the main event. Triple H came out victorious bringing Jericho’s reign to an end at 98 days.
