During that time, the feud between the Hardy boys and the tag team of Edge and Christian gave the word extreme a whole new meaning.

The tag teams delivered some of the most unforgettable matches feuding for a couple of years. However, there was a moment in their match in 2000 that even the fans may not be aware of. In an edition of his podcast, Matt Hardy shared a story about Edge almost suffocating mid-match due to wearing the wrong mask.

Matt Hardy recalls when Edge nearly suffocated during his match

From 1999 to 2000, the Hardy boys were synonymous with the word extreme. Similarly, Edge and Christian were also at the top of their game. Both Tag Teams were slated to compete for the World Tag Team Championship at the No Mercy PPV event.

However, Edge and Christian were disguised as ‘Los Conquistadors’ as they were banned from competing for the titles after being defeated by the Hardys on an episode of Raw weeks before. Edge and Christian temporarily adopted the Los Conquistadors’ gimmick by donning the golden masks and outfits.

But when they arrived at the arena, there weren’t any masks available and so E&C had to go to a mall to purchase new masks.

Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, the former ECW Champion recalled when Edge almost suffocated mid-match. According to Matt, Edge’s mask was spray-painted a few hours before the match. Edge had to contend with breathing the fumes which nearly asphyxiated him halfway through the match.

“Adam’s mask, Edge’s mask, was actually spray-painted gold. He almost suffocated. He almost passed out because he was wearing a mask that had been spray-painted just a couple of hours earlier.” Said Hardy.

It eventually paid off for Edge and Christian as they defeated the Hardys and emerged as the new World Tag Team Champions.

Edge reveals he did not enjoy the love triangle feud involving him, Lita, and Matt Hardy

It’s no secret that Edge and Matt Hardy were at each other’s throats in 2005. While most of their animosity was real, a part of it was also storyline-driven. The story goes, Lita was on the road while Matt Hardy while was at home nursing an injury.

Lita got close to Edge on the road and strayed on her then-boyfriend Matt Hardy. When Hardy caught wind about Lita dating Edge, all hell broke loose. WWE capitalized on the opportunity and made a storyline out of it.

Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show podcast, The Rated R Superstar explained how he hated working the angle but had no choice as it was his cross to bear.

“I think when everything with Matt [Hardy] and [Lita], I didn’t enjoy any of that, that was hard. It was a position that I put myself in and thought okay, I made my bed, I just got to deal with this. Then I thought okay, we’re here now, how can we pull a positive? Let’s make some money.” Said Edge.
