King of the Ring

The WWE hosts a pay per view almost every month. Some of them have stood the test of time and others have fallen by the wayside. WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble and Survivor Series are the four biggest shows in the WWE calendar. Money in the Bank is also slowly establishing itself as one of the biggest events of the year and if reports are correct, it will be used to bring back a concept that once sat along the big 4 as well.

The King of the Ring was once a tool in the WWE’s arsenal to create their next big star. Its greatest product is Stone Cold Steve Austin, who used the pedestal to become arguably the greatest entertainer of all time.

Winning the King of the Ring tournament was usually followed by a main event run. In the last decade or two, winning the Money in the Bank has served a similar purpose of plucking mid-carders and propelling them into the World Title scene.

Interestingly, it appears that Money in the bank will be the platform where WWE decides to resurrect its predecessor.

WWE could bring back King and Queen of the ring at Money In the Bank

According to a report from Xero News, WWE are currently planning to crown the next King and Queen of the Ring at Money in the Bank this year. They wrote:

“A source has informed us that the current plan is for the King and Queen of the ring to be crowned at the MITB PLE.”

It is important to note that WWE filed for a trademark with the USPTO on December 8 for the term, “WWE King and Queen of the Ring.”

There have been rumors that the WWE could revive the tournament as a standalone pay per view.

Regardless, even if the only features the finals at Money in the bank, it will still be a treat for UK fans, who will have received more than they were even expecting in the first place.

Who were the last King and Queen?

The first Queen’s crown tournament was held in 2021 concurrently with the King of the Ring tournament. Both finals took place at WWE Crown Jewel 2021 in Saudi Arabia. The men’s tournament was won by Xavier Woods and the Queen’s Crown was won by Zelina Vega.

WWE has not held either of the tournaments since. However, there are a lot of encouraging signs to the WWE bringing the tournament back to their annual calendar. Although, it remains to be seen if it is brought back as its own pay per view or just as any of their other tournaments.

Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all.
