Martin Guptill gets hit-wicket off Andile Phehlukwayo: New Zealand’s opening batsman was dismissed in a unfortunate manner.
During the 25th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between New Zealand and South Africa at Edgbaston, New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill’s praiseworthy innings came to an end in an unfortunate manner.
Guptill, who opened the batting with Colin Munro (9), was in the middle of a 60-run partnership alongside captain Kane Williamson when he was out hit-wicket.
It happened on the last ball of the 15th over when Guptill’s attempt to hook an Andile Phehlukwayo delivery saw him hitting the ball stumps with his foot. The swivel in his shot ended up costing Guptill his wicket.
It might have been an unusual innings for the 32-year old batsman but he looked to play according to the target and conditions. Before getting out, Guptill scored 35 (59) with the help of five fours.
Guptill’s dismissal was followed by New Zealand losing veteran batsman Ross Taylor (1) and wicket-keeper batsman Tom Latham (1) in quick succession. Chasing a 242-run target in 49 overs, New Zealand were reduced to 80/4 in the 19th over.
After Williamson won the toss and chose to field, South Africa scored 241/6 in their allotted quota of 49 overs. Rassie van der Dussen, who came in to bat at No. 5 in the 28th over, top-scored for the Proteas scoring 67* (64) with the help of two fours and three sixes. With bowling figures of 10-0-69-3, Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa.

It’s been an all-action start to New Zealand’s chase at Edgbaston!
Kagiso Rabada dismissed Colin Munro early, and after some beautiful batting, Martin Guptill has just trodden on his stumps to give New Zealand an opening.
