IPL 2017 Auction : How does it work?
The extravaganza of the IPL is upon us and in a day, we have the IPL 2017 Auction in Bangalore. All the teams have identified the requirements for strengthening their sides and we will be in for a grand show. A maximum of 75 out of the total 352 players can be purchased by the teams. Among these, 28 can be overseas players.
However, the teams are not expected to spend to the hilt as there is a fresh auction for 2018. This is the last auction in the 10 year cycle and all players will be released for next year’s auction. Despite this, players like Ben Stokes, Jason Roy and Corey Anderson will attract massive interest.
All about the working of IPL 2017 Auction
Much like the previous editions, the IPL 2017 Auction will be hosted by renowned Welsh auctioneer, Richard Madley. Illustrated below is the way how the IPL 2017 Auction will work on February 20.
- All the players will be available for the auction and will be split into pots based on their function in the team.
- The representatives of the teams have to raise their paddles while showing interest for a player. The highest bid will get the player’s services for this IPL
- A player goes unsold if no team raises their paddle
- The unsold players come back into the pool for a second round of auctions after all players go under the hammer.
- The teams list the players they are interested in and thereafter, they are bid for again for half the original base price.
- The players not bought by the franchises for the second time goes unsold.
This is the way the bids are increased :

Interestingly, the previous editions had a provision for a secret bid. Through this, the teams interested in buying a particular player had to submit their bids separately to the auctioneer. Henceforth, the franchisee with the highest bid acquired the player.
