WATCH: Jasprit Bumrah justifies MS Dhoni’s slow innings vs West Indies in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
Jasprit Bumrah justifies MS Dhoni’s slow innings: Indian spearhead explained how Dhoni’s innings yielded fruits for the Indian team.
Former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s batting strike rate has once again come under the radar. In five ODIs of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Dhoni had scored 146 runs at an average of 36.50 and an economy rate of 83.42.
Notwithstanding Dhoni scoring his 72nd ODI half-century, he sent a lot of jitters to both fans and experts especially when he was batting at 20* (40) by the end of the 42nd over. Although he finished well in the last over, one has to admit that his approach has it in it to be questioned.

Speaking along leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Chahal TV, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah advocated for Dhoni taking time yesterday. The spearhead also claimed Dhoni’s innings to be “underrated”.

“Such type of innings is highly underrated. Sometimes, it appears as if he [MS Dhoni] is playing slowly and takes a lot of time. But while batting on such wickets, it is important to take your time. We all saw how he took the game deep and in the end, it was because of him that we could reach 268 which was a very good total on this wicket,” Bumrah was quoted as saying.
During the post-match presentation yesterday, India captain Virat Kohli opened up on how Dhoni judges the par score for India and bats accordingly. Bumrah also spoke on similar lines saying that Dhoni’s innings played a vital role in India scoring 268/7.
“This is where his experience comes in handy for the team as he absorbs all the pressure, takes the game deep and backs his style of play. We youngsters learn a lot from him. So, it was a top-rated innings because of which we could reach around 270,” Bumrah added.
