Watch: Virat Kohli thunderously claps for Rohit Sharma and keeps the door open for him after his fantastic knock of 176 vs South Africa.

Rohit Sharma had a dream debut in the test Arena notching up 2 hundreds in the series against West Indies, including a 177 on debut. The second highest score by an Indian on debut just behind his One Day opening partner Shikhar Dhawan’s 187.

His career however, has since fallen on the wayside. Despite continuous chances in the middle order, Rohit’s technique was found wanting in the longer format. He was picked and dropped several times, but he could never cement his place.

Following the ban of Prithvi Shaw and the KL Rahul’s horrendous form, Rohit Sharma was given the opportunity to open for India in the 5-day format. Much like his first match as a One Day opener, Rohit did not disappoint and ended the first day with a hundred to his name.

He carried on in the same vein on the second day and looked set to pick up his first double ton. However, he finally fell for 176, putting up a massive 376 run stand opening partnership with Mayank Agarwal.

On his way back to the pavilion, Rohit Sharma received a standing ovation from the dressing room with Skipper Virat Kohli leading the applause. For all the talk of rife and rift between the two, Kohli seemed very joyful seeing Rohit prove his critics wrong.

Kohli patted Rohit Sharma on the back before closing the door behind him.

India would go on to declare just before the close of play with the score at 502/7. Mayank Agarwal helped himself to 215. His first ever century in test cricket and in his first ever match at home soil. With 20 more overs left to go, India have South Africa on the ropes with their score being 39/3 at the end of the day.
