Latest ICC Test batsmen rankings 2019: The Indian opening batsman and vice-captain have made significant improvements.

India opening batsman Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane have registered significant improvements in the latest update of the MRF Tyres ICC Test batsmen’s rankings. Both the batsmen have been rewarded for being among the runs during the recent concluded home series against South Africa.

Playing as an opening batsman for the first time, Sharma amassed 529 runs in three Tests at an average of 132.25 and a strike rate of 77.45 including three centuries. The 32-year old batsman also registered his maiden double century in the third Test in Ranchi.

As a result, Sharma has jumped 12 position to reach No. 10 in the Test rankings. It is worth mentioning that Sharma is only the third Indian after Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli to have entered the Top 10 batsmen’s list across formats.

Having scored 487 runs in the last five Tests at an average of 81.16 and a strike rate of 49.24 including two centuries and three half-centuries, Rahane has reached a career-best position of No. 5 in the list. Rahane had earlier reached the same position in November 2016.

While captain Kohli continues to be at No. 2 in the list, opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has dropped to No. 18 despite scoring two centuries against South Africa. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara has retained his position of No. 4 in the rankings.

Among the bowlers, both Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav has made improvements by reaching at No. 15 and No. 24 respectively. Being lauded for their performance in Indian conditions, the pair collected a total of 24 wickets between them in three Tests.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been phenomenal with both the bat and ball of late, has retained his No. 2 position in the list of all-rounders. On the other hand, Ravichandran Ashwin has dropped down to No. 6 in the same list.
