Will coronavirus affect ICC T20 World Cup 2020?
Apart from the Indian Premier League, another showpiece event scheduled for this year is the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. Slated to be played in October-November, there is still enough time regarding the tournament recovering from the global health crisis.
Having said that, growing number of cases in Australia have forced their government to lockdown international borders. If speculations are to be believed, the same will continue to happen for the next six months.
A recent report in The Indian Express suggests that the International Cricket Council is likely to conduct a teleconference later this month regarding the same.
“The ICC is likely to have at least preliminary discussions on the fate of the World Cup when its 18 member board of directors including heads of the 12 test playing nations hold a teleconference on March 29. It was supposed to be a full-fledged meeting over three days in Dubai before the coronavirus situation forced a change in plans,” read the report on the future of ICC T20 World Cup 2020.
While it is too early to predict the outcome of the teleconference, it will be difficult for the ICC to postpone the tournament for another season of the Men’s T20 World Cup is already scheduled to take place next year in India.
