World Table Tennis Championships: Sharath Kamal’s loss ends India’s Challenge

Sharath Kamal bowed out of the World Table Tennis Championships last night after a tantalising round of 32 loss to Chinese Lin Gaoyuan here in Dusseldorf. Gaoyuan won 11-13, 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4.

Sharath took an early lead in the match, but was immediately pegged back as Gaoyuan took a 2-1 lead. Sharath rallied to even the match at 2-2, and hoped for a huge comeback against the World Number 40.

But it all came down when Gaoyuan came all guns blazing in the 5th set, taking the game to Sharath and not allowing him to play his natural game.

Sharath conceded that a few silly mistakes cost him the match, as at 2-2 he was confident of upsetting Gaoyuan.

“When I made it 2-2, I thought I had a chance. But some mistakes on my part proved costly. Lin didn’t let me play my game in the latter part, he was too good,” said Sharath.

With Sharat bowing out, the Indian challenge at the World Table Tennis Championships has come to an end. Manika Batra’s and Mouma Das’ quarter final run was the highlight of the Indian challenge and hopefully they can replicate this and go even further next year
