With Lewis Hamilton set to equal the record of Championship titles won by Michael Schumacher, the comparisons between the two are now ever-rising.
The romantics in F1 still value Schumacher higher than Hamilton, but the Britain born driver has hardly given any reason to be considered behind Schumacher.
Fernando Alonso, another great in the sport, has opined in the comparison between the two drivers and the Spaniard backs former Ferrari driver.
In an interview with German SportBild, he spoke about which great driver would it be harder to compete against – Schumacher or Hamilton. He answered: “Difficult. These are different eras and cars with different levels of performance.
“But I remember Michael as a pilot who is hard to beat, one with the greatest talent. He had that little bit extra. Lewis is very good and the best of his generation.”
“But he didn’t win the World Championship with McLaren when he was a team-mate of Jenson (Button). At Mercedes, Nico Rosberg also won the World Championship. Michael never had such things. He always won. For me, Michael is one step ahead.” he added.
Schumachers return to Formula 1
Schumacher finally retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2012 season, after a short stint with Mercedes. Now, nearly a decade later his son is set to make his debut in Formula 1.
It was announced on Tuesday that Mick Schumacher would be making a debut in the next F1 Grand Prix weekend for Alfa Romeo, as he will be participating in one of the Free practices on 9th October in Germany.
It remains to be seen where the legacy of Schumachers will reach in Formula 1 in the coming years.
