Deandre Baker contribution to the Chiefs: Next big lockdown cornerback?
Deandre Baker has the ability and talent to be the next big lockdown cornerback. The Chiefs have given the opportunity he needed-
Cornerback Deandre Baker is back in the NFL after his criminal charges were dropped all of a sudden. He was signed to the Chiefs practice squad just a few days back. Baker was initially drafted by the Giants in 2019 as the 30th overall pick.
What are Deandre Baker’s abilities?
Deandre Baker has good timing on jump balls and is extremely aggressive. These skills allow him to make plays on the ball that lead to pass breakups and interceptions.
He is also a press corner who has proven he can thrive against man-to-man challenges in a competitive conference. Baker isn’t too fast, but his awareness and recognition allow him to stay in tight coverage.
How could the Chiefs utilize Deandre Baker?
Baker will most likely play as the slot cornerback for the Chiefs. He will probably be paired up with Rashad Fenton. However, fans won’t be seeing Baker for at least a few weeks until he is familiar with the Chief’s defensive scheme.
Does he have any weaknesses?
Baker had a tough first year in the NFL. He struggled with a sprained knee before the 2019 NFL season. He also claimed that he wasn’t fitting in with the Giants defensive scheme.
However, Baker did often get beat in coverages. His lack of communication often allowed receivers to find weak spots and make big plays. Baker also couldn’t keep up against faster and bigger receivers.
