Yuki Tsunoda to AlphaTauri: Daniil Kvyat is focusing on the final three races at Bahrain and Abu Dhabi as chances of retention slim.

Russian driver Daniil Kvyat has admitted that his time in Formula 1 might be getting over soon. He is resigned to the fact that he is going to be replaced at AlphaTauri, most likely by F2 driver Yuki Tsunoda.

“The chances of me being here next year are very slim. I am kind of already with my mind focusing on the three races here and not really thinking to myself about the future.”

Kvyat instead wants to focus on the last three races and continue AlphaTauri’s good recent form with Pierre Gasly. Tsunoda meanwhile is performing impressively in F2 and is still in contention for the title. Irrespective of how his season ends there, he is expected to make the move to the pinnacle of the sport next season.

“I am just going to give my best to the team in the next three races and then we will see. They deserve me to be thinking about these three races and staying focused because, in the end, this year there has been a lot of ups and downs but lately it has been better and better. I am just hoping to continue this trend and close the year in the best way possible and then we will see what the future holds.”

Daniil Kvyat to return to F1 as he targets world title

The Russian maintained he still wants to become the world champion, despite an average past few seasons. There are rumors of a Russian team entering F1 this decade, and Nikita Mazepin will step up to American team Haas next season, so that is still a distinct possibility.

”Of course, as a driver you want to fight for the world title and I will always keep that desire. I will just try to come back, because my career has already shown that you can get another chance. A lot of things have to fall into place. You have to be in the right place at the right time.”
