Racing Point conceded their third place to McLaren after Sergio Perez’s engine failure at Bahrain GP, with just two races remaining.

After Sergio Perez’s podium at Istanbul, it seemed as if Racing Point will race away in their quest to be the best of the rest. He also had a separate agenda to deal with – dislodging Alex Albon off the Red Bull seat. And he seemed to be on track with his dual objective after qualifying P5 for the Bahrain GP yesterday, crucially ahead of Renault.

And with teammate Lance Stroll looking in good form too, Racing Point were the favorites, until this happened:

The double DNFs resulted in Racing Point losing third to McLaren. When asked after the race what happened exactly, he spoke little about it. Instead, he sent out a message to Red Bull that his experience counts more than what Alex Albon could potentially offer in their fight to dislodge Mercedes.

“We had no idea (of the engine failure).”

“I have been in sports for 10 years. People know what I can do ”.

Perez also spoke about the near-fatal crash Frenchman Romain Grosjean endured during Lap 2. The Haas driver has suffered minor injuries and is currently being treated at a nearby hospital.

“After what happened today, you really put everything into perspective. For me, one podium more, one podium less. It doesn’t matter. The most important thing about the day is that Romain is with us.”
