‘Luka Doncic’s agent has spent 17 years repaying $3 million for a mistake’: How Bill Duffy bounced back to sign Mavericks star
Luka Doncic’s current agent Bill Duffy was once guilty of neglect, costing Anthony Carter his $4.1 million extension with the Miami Heat.
After the 2002-03 season, Carter, then 27, was planning to exercise a $4.1 million player option to remain in Miami. He had until the 30th of June to let his franchise know he would be returning.
Picking up the option was a no-brainer. Carter was coming off a down season, averaging 4.1 points on .356 shooting in 49 games. For a player with that stat line, $4.1 million is a fortune even today.
This is my favorite feature I’ve written on the NBA:
17 years since NBA agent Billy Duffy accidentally cost Anthony Carter $3 million, he’s paid him back this year.

How is Bill Duffy, the agent of Luka Doncic, faring these days?
Carter eventually signed a contract worth less than a million dollars. Duffy promised to pay him back the difference of $3 million in the future. It took him all of 17 years to do so, and he was only able to pay Carter off this year.
Since that error, however, Carter has signed the likes of Goran Dragic, Rajon Rondo and Luka Doncic later on.
Carter’s blunder has had a cascading effect. The unexpected amount of cap space Pat Riley found at his disposal enabled the Heat to sign Lamar Odom. They would later trade him with Caron Butler to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Shaquille O’Neal.
Agent Bill Duffy and his @BDA_Sports owned up to their $3 Million mistake on Anthony Carter’s option. The entire amount has now been paid to Carter. #SportsBizhttps://t.co/e0vwY77OcF
