"It is something we have already discussed"- Jean Todt says Romain Grosjean crash gave a learning point

“It is something we have already discussed”- Jean Todt reveals that Romain Grosjean crash gave them a learning point over safety.

Drivers on the present date are much safer in a Formula 1 car in comparison to even like five years ago, yet this season saw one of the most horrific crashes in the history of the sport, fortunately, the victim- Romain Grosjean survived with few minor burns.

According to FIA president, Jean Todt, despite the gravity of the crash, it gave the governing body a learning point towards the absolute safety of the drivers, which is the final objective.

“When you see that, you have a kind of scary thought. Because you see on the television that a car explodes and fires. You don’t know what happens next,” explains Todt according to RaceFans.

“After a few long seconds, which felt like hours, you see something come out of the car and then you know that he survived. It is something we have already discussed within the FIA, with a special group looking at security.”

“That is of course at the top of our agenda with the goal of ‘Vision Zero'”, Todt says. The FIA boss further went onto say that there is still a huge scope of improvement safety-wise and a lot still has to be done.

“Unfortunately, too often, especially in national championships, officials, drivers and co-drivers crash during events and we want to prevent that from happening”.

The Grosjean crash is therefore a good point to evaluate. “Of course we talk a lot about it because it was on live television all over the world.”

Analysis of minor details

The scariest part of Grosjean crash was that the Haas car broke into two and the initial impact on the car saw a huge blast, allegedly caused by fuel tank explosion, and Todt wants to find out answers for all the details.

“We need to understand why his car broke in two, why the fuel tank probably exploded and that’s something we have to learn after every accident. Not just the accidents you see in the international media, but every accident that happens”, concludes Todt.
