‘Lakers took an L by extending Kyle Kuzma’: NBA Twitter responds to 25-year-old signing $40 million extension

Fans, whether of Lakers or not, roast the team over Kyle Kuzma’s extension

The Los Angeles Lakers took a lot of Ws over the course of the past few months. They ended their 10-year drought and equaled the no. of rings that the Celtics have. After that strong finish to the year, they got more Ws, as they upgraded their roster a lot, signed Anthony Davis to a 5-year deal, and extended LeBron James’ contract.

As all good things come to an end, so did the Lakers’ win streak, at least according to a lot of NBA followers. The Lakers decided to offer Kyle Kuzma his contract extension, after his strong showing in the preseason games.

Lakers extend Kyle Kuzma’s rookie contract, sign 3-year, $40 million deal

It was Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN who reported the Kuzma extension. It is a unique, one of its kind non-max rookie extension which has a player option in the second year.

Player option on a non-max rookie extension is a first in league, a creative wrinkle that allows Kuzma into unrestricted free agency in his prime at 28. Smart move and great benefit for Kuzma should he out-perform this deal headed into summer of 2023.

This particular news did not sit well with a lot of people. There was a lot of negative reaction to the same.

It remains to be seen how much role the Lakers give to Kyle Kuzma this season, and how he handles the responsibility. The Lakers take the floor on the opening night against the Clippers for the primetime contest.
