“Formula 1 will become a sport all about energy”- Cyril Abiteboul expects that Formula 1 could become a powerhouse battle between constructors.

With the talks of new hybrid engine regulations stepping in from 2026, there have been plans to include new technology to keep the sport interesting and fascinating for fans and manufacturers.

Thus, F1 may map the inclusion of new engine development, fuels and batteries. Cyril Abiteboul, Renault’s team principal, has now opined that this can transform F1 into an energy battle.

“I think that there is a fascinating sort of area that is going to open for energy development,” explained Abiteboul as per the Autosport. “I think Formula 1 will become a sport all about energy, what type of fuel do we want, what type of battery do we want to use also.

“I see that these things will be essential in terms of a breakthrough for the industry and my opinion, Formula 1 has a great role to play, to lead the way in that respect.

“Clearly, these things will have an impact, not just on the sport and not just on the automotive [market], but frankly on a vast scale.”

Advancements in line to go carbon zero

Formula 1 in compliance to the Paris Agreement wants to go Carbon Neutral in the following years and has now delivered the second package of bio-fuels to the teams to verify its compatibility with the future engines. “You take all the member states, they’re talking about climate change, about the environment,” he said.

“We as a regulator and legislator around motorsport around the world, and also as the biggest road user organisation around the world, it’s essential that we speak about sustainability, about the environment, about pollution.”
