Joe Root wicket today: Watch Axar Patel dismisses English captain to pick maiden Test wicket in Chennai
Joe Root wicket today: The English captain was dismissed cheaply by the debutant Indian all-rounder at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
During the second day of the second Test of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Chennai, debutant India all-rounder Axar Patel picked his maiden Test wicket in the form of England captain Joe Root.
It all happened on the third delivery of the 11th over when Root’s attempt of sweeping Patel against the turn led to his dismissal. Root, who has been banking on the sweep shot since his time in Sri Lanka last month, top-edged a Patel delivery to Ravichandran Ashwin at short fine-leg.
Considering Root’s form in the last three Tests, India were delighted after dismissing him cheaply at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Coming in to bat at No. 4 in the eighth over, Root walked back to the pavilion after scoring 6 (12).
Patel, who was introduced into the attack as a first-change bowler in the ninth over, picked his first Test wicket in only his second over. The 27-year old player picked bowling figures of 5-1-9-1 in his first spell in this format.
With the English batsmen struggling against the Indian bowlers on a bowler-friendly surface, the visitors have been reduced to 39/4 in 18 overs at the lunch break.
Earlier, India wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant (58*) scored his sixth Test half-century to power India to 329/10 in 95.5 overs. With bowling figures of 29-3-128-4, England all-rounder Moeen Ali was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings.
