“Michael Jordan would be the new logo”: Doc Rivers explains why it is foolhardy to honor Kobe Bryant with a new NBA logo
Doc Rivers thinks Michael Jordan should be honored on any new NBA logo instead of Kobe Bryant, and he explains why.
Kyrie Irving has been fighting a lone ranger’s battle for the past couple of days, trying to get the NBA to change their logo to a silhouette of the Lakers legend. He’s gotten Vanessa’s nod, and that of a couple of other people.
However, this is a suggestion that came right out of the left field. Yes, Kobe Bryant is thought to be the most skilled, textbook player of all time. For that reason, he could be a great candidate to be on the logo of any basketball league.
To add to this, Bryant also has a rabid following over a year since his death – Mamba truthers are everywhere. There’s a significant chunk of NBA fans who believe Kobe to genuinely be a top GOAT candidate.
Doc Rivers on why Michael Jordan, rather than Kobe Bryant, should be on the NBA logo
Doc Rivers is from the 90s era of basketball, so he understandably will always side with MJ. But more importantly, the Sixers’ head coach brought the level of nuance to this discussion which has sorely been missing. He’s totally in the ‘if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it’ camp as far as a new logo is concerned:
“I have been asked that but I don’t know the answer to that. I mean Michael Jordan would be the logo.”

“Listen, if you want a logo, Michael to me, would be it. But I don’t know if you change for change. You usually change things because of history and you find something out that doesn’t fit. Jerry has been a deserving logo and I have no problem with him continuing to be the logo.”
“I mean what are we going to do, change the logo every 10 or 20 years? So, I like our logo and I think we should probably stick with it. I am probably in the minority in that thought.”
