“Everybody in this building should know who Patrick Ewing is”: Knicks legend was incandescent after being subjected to numerous security checks at Madison Square Garden
Patrick Ewing says he was stopped numerous times by MSG security in the recent past. His comments came after his Georgetown team beat Vilanova.
Patrick Ewing is easily the most recognizable player in the history of the New York Knicks. The former #1 pick in the 1985 NBA draft played for 15 long years at Madison Square Garden as its resident star.
The Knicks won 2 championships in the 1970s, but it was Ewing who carried the torch in the 90s. The 90s are often considered the best era of New York basketball, despite them having seen more success earlier on.
Considering this background, it seems unbelievable that Ewing was subjected to this treatment in his happy hunting grounds. But such is life for Knicks legends today.
Patrick Ewing speaks out about security checks at Madison Square Garden
Ewing coached his Hoyas to a 72-71 upset of the top-seeded Wildcats on Thursday. This was perhaps the most meaningful victory of Ewing’s coaching career. The former New York Knicks star said after the game, however, that he has been “getting stopped” and “accosted” at Madison Square Garden:
“I do want to say one thing, though. I thought this was my building. And I feel terrible that I’m getting stopped, accosted, [people] asking for passes.”
“Everybody in this building should know who the hell I am, and I’m getting stopped — I can’t move around this building. I was like, ‘What the hell? Is this Madison Square Garden?'”
“I thought this was my building. … Everybody in this building should know who the hell I am.”

However, we shouldn’t be holding our breath for Jim Dolan to change his ways. The Knicks’ owner did, after all, debar Charles Oakley from entering MSG because of his personal whims.
