RKO, the three most devastating letters in the history of Sports Entertainment, is one of the most popular moves ever in professional wresrtling. It is also a clever play on both Orton’s real name and the move’s actual name. The RKO comes from the wrestler’s name Randy Keith Orton and the move is based on the TKO.

On the latest episode of Broken Skulls, Orton told Stone Cold Steve Austin how he came up with the name. The Viper also spoke about Vince McMahon’s reaction upon finding out the name he had decided for his new finisher.

Randy Orton reveals Vince McMahon’s reaction to him naming his finisher ‘RKO’

“Vince is walking in the hallway. We needed a name for this thing. You know, Randy Keith Orton are my initials, and I came up, I’m like, TKO, RKO, this KO, KO, KO, KO, like RKO. Vince, what do you think? And he was just, never skipped a beat, kept walking, didn’t change his stride. He said, “I like it.” That was it! Next thing you know, it’s RKO, RKO. Again, lucky man. Right place, right time.”

The RKO took a life of its own and became popular among the mainstream audience as well. It was constantly featured on several memes across every platform on the internet. Orton told Stone Cold that he couldn’t take credit for it and praised his opponents for the creative and entertaining manner in which they have taken the move.

“It just took on a mind of its own, man, and I’m so fortunate to work with so many guys that are so creative in the way that they’ll have me hit them with it. I can’t take credit for all these memes where, like, I hit it out of a 360… It’s their idea, so I can’t take all the credit.”

Randy Orton is reportedly in line for a Wrestlemania match with Bray Wyatt. Tonight at Fastlane however, he is scheduled to face Alexa Bliss in an intergender match.
