“The Raptors were in La La Land for the Kyle Lowry trade”: Daryl Morey explains why the Sixers exited the sweepstakes for Lowry
Daryl Morey was recently on a podcast, where he revealed why the Sixers didn’t trade for Kyle Lowry. He says the Raptors were in ‘La La Land’.
Kyle Lowry was supposed to be the biggest trading chip in action at the trade deadline. Teams like Miami, Philly and the Lakers were in play for the veteran point guard. But none of these teams were ready to pony up the asking price attached by Masai Ujiri.
Great as Lowry has been, the 2019 NBA champion is now 35 years old. His playing style – confrontational and rugged – has stood him in good stead, but isn’t traditionally good for longevity.
The Raptors seemingly demanded Talen Horton-Tucker, Dennis Schroder and a draft pick in addition to a few more pieces for Lowry. Rob Pelinka put the phone down when the discussions veered to THT.

Trade Deadline Day saw 45 players included in transactions done by 17 NBA teams. This is exactly 10% of all players on full-size rosters across the league – a record of late.
The Philadelphia 76ers were supposed to be players in the Kyle Lowry sweepstakes. But Masai Ujiri has the luxury of being able to wait till the offseason to ship his aging star. So he put a high asking price on his point guard.
Daryl Morey says that the Sixers did try to trade for Lowry. Morey had offered Tyrese Maxey and Matisse Thybulle in addition to a draft pick, but Ujiri was holding out for better offers.
