DeMarcus Cousins shares hilarious defensive strategy while playing alongside Paul George on the Clippers: “I’m the only 3rd string big-man on a 10-day contract getting double teamed”
DeMarcus Cousins is shocked at the fact that he’s being double teamed in the post as he’s a 3rd string big on a 10-day contract.
DeMarcus Cousins has most definitely been dealt the short end of the stick for the past 3 years and counting; at least when it comes to his life on the court. After tearing his left Achilles in January of 2018, the big-man suffered a torn ACL in the 2019 offseason that eventually led to his decline from an All-NBA center to an afterthought as he’s been hunting his way back onto an NBA roster ever since.
Though he did sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2019-20 season, he saw no playing time as he was still recovering from his ACL tear. Now, seemingly healthy enough to contribute to a legit title contender, DeMarcus Cousins has found his way back into the NBA as an active member of the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers signed him to a 10-day contract but announced yesterday that they will be retaining him for the remainder of the NBA season.
DeMarcus Cousins is confused at the way defenses are treating him.
After having missed as much time as he has, DeMarcus Cousins isn’t nearly the same player he was when back on the Sacramento Kings as he’s visibly lost a significant deal of strength and speed. Understandably so as his injury history is one that is very difficult to come back from.
Regardless, NBA defenses seem to be treating a player who plays back-up to Ivica Zubac as if he were an All-NBA center. This double-teaming out of the post certainly had Boogie confused as he hilariously addressed the issue to Tom Azarly.
“I gotta be the first person in NBA history to be a 3rd string big on a 10-day contract getting double teamed. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. It’s pretty funny to me.”
I asked DeMarcus Cousins why he says he’s surprised that he’s getting double teamed in the post:

Cousins has been a decent spark plug off the bench for the Clippers as his limited time on the court has proven he can still spread the floor at a decent rate. Though he hasn’t been able to bully his way down-low, he seems to have adopted a decent hook shot as a counter to tougher defenses.
Being a veteran in this league, Cousins could definitely provide the Clips with a solid 7-10 minutes of offense in the Playoffs. Though his defense is border-line atrocious, it’ll be interesting to see who Ty Lue surrounds Cousins with, or rather, what lineup of players he decides to drop DeMarcus into on the big stage.
