“Russell Westbrook deserved his MVP”: Draymond Green justifies Warriors teammate Stephen Curry’s MVP case by using Russ as an example
Draymond Green is campaigning hard for Stephen Curry to win a 3rd MVP. He’s using Russell Westbrook as an example for his argument.
Steph will finish 2020-21 with the second scoring title of his career. In terms of all-time offensive seasons, Curry’s 2015-16 outings were considered to be the best of the best. He’s been even better this year on a lot of fronts.
Steph finished April averaging an unreal 37.4 points per game while making damn near 7 3-pointers per game. His run in that month carried the Warriors from 4 games under .500 (23-27) to their current record of 38-33. They’ve won 15 of their last 21 games now.
Nikola Jokic is this year’s NBA MVP in most people’s eyes, mainly because of his consistency. The Joker has been setting historical precedent with his unconventional style of play for a center.
But there is a significant faction of fans that views Steph as this season’s true MVP. Draymond Green, as a teammate, is obviously using these rallying calls to make Steph’s case.
Draymond Green talks up Russell Westbrook for his 2016-17 MVP
Russ became the first player in 55 years to finish an NBA season averaging a triple-double, back in 2017. The upheaval that he caused in NBA circles at the time was bonkers. Barely 3 years back, Lance Stephenson held the season high for triple-doubles with a paltry 6.
Westbrook changed all of that in 2015-16, and he took his game to a whole new level for the following year. Draymond is completely in agreement with the MVP voting given how the Brody shepherded that Thunder team to the playoffs:
“I had no problem with him winning the MVP because I actually thought he f–king deserved it. That OKC team he was on was horses–t. Complete horses–t. And he carried that team to the playoffs while going out and averaging a triple double, completely destroying every team that he played against.”
Draymond Green had time to chat on an off-day – his “last cheat day before the playoffs.” And so, as he sat in the drive thru line at In & Out, we chewed the fat.

“I thought he deserved to be the MVP. Why? Because he was so valuable to that team that he got that team to the playoffs while averaging a triple double. You’re damn right he deserved to be the MVP.”
