“The car looks better thanks to Max than it really is”– Jos Verstappen hits against Red Bull and credits his son for overachieving with it.
Red Bull promised Max Verstappen to make him the youngest world champion in the history of F1, but after last year’s debacle, it is not possible now, and Jos Verstappen hasn’t been kind to Red Bull for not giving a better car than Mercedes.
Despite the initial praises to RB16B, Verstappen Snr. has credited his son with making the most out of the 2021 Red Bull car, as this year is also Max’s sole challenge to Lewis Hamilton, but slowly falling short against him.
Maybe I shouldn’t say it, but: The car looks better thanks to Max than it really is,” the Dutchman sees his son as a decisive factor. “These are no nose drills, but somehow Max does an outstanding job,” his father told De Telegraaf.
“We hope that Red Bull gives him the material to really show it,” said the Dutchman.
It’s about tyre management.
Jos claims a deficit between Red Bull and Mercedes of tyre wear is huge, as the former’s tyre loss is more than the W12. Thus Red Bull has to make more efforts in tyre management, and it led to Red Bull defeat in Barcelona.
“Max has to drive more at the limit to keep up with them – and of course he demands a lot more from the tires.” Jos also believes that Red Bull can give everything in the qualifying but lacks the same during the race.
“They try the same thing in the race, but then the tires wear out faster,” he says. “Sometimes he just wants more than what is in the car,” says his father. “But that’s not a mistake. You can see that Max just does everything he can.”
