“It’s mega to see a real fight on track” – Red Bull reserve driver Alex Albon is pleased with the fight for the title between Mercedes and Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton facing the heat from Max Verstappen.

For the first time in the turbo-hybrid era, it is Red Bull – and not Ferrari – fighting neck-to-neck with Mercedes for the world title. This has pleased their reverse and test driver Alexander Albon, as quoted in his column for GQ.

First off, it’s mega to see a real fight on track between two different teams.

“The teams also have an eye on the big regulation changes for next year, which is going to add a bit of spice to the overall development race towards the end of this season.

“Mercedes were on the back foot in Bahrain, but they have shown before how they can bounce back and they have already developed the car at a fast rate – you don’t win seven consecutive world championships by accident.

“It looks like the pace advantage that we had in Bahrain has been matched and just edged by Mercedes in Barcelona, but it is still so early in the season and the boys and girls back at our factory have a reputation for rapid in-season development.”

Max Verstappen vs Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 title

The win at Monaco for Max Verstappen has resulted in him leading the championship, with Lewis Hamilton a close second. This excites Albon, who like all neutrals, want this battle to be decided at the very end – the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“You can see how hungry Max is, his first laps in Imola and Barcelona, where he had his elbows out, really showed that,” he added.

“He wants this championship and I hope the fight is really going to develop over the course of the season. It would be great to see this battle grow and go punch-for-punch to the end.”
