“The Clippers could’ve been Kevin Durant’s team”: Lou Williams recalls wanting the Nets superstar to leave Steph Curry to join forces in LA
Former 6th man of the year Lou Williams recently stated that he had tried recruiting Kevin Durant to the Clippers during the 2019 offseason.
There is no denying that Kevin Durant was the biggest free agent after his tenure in the Warriors was coming to an end. There were reports of him engaging in talks with several teams surfacing in the media. Every basketball fan wanted to know what would be the 2x NBA Finals MVP’s next move.
Durant had a phenomenal run with the Warriors. During his 3-year tenure with Dub Nation, Durant won 2 NBA championships and was the Finals MVP in both cases. The Warriors were a juggernaut during the time with the likes of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Durant.
However, reports in the media suggested that Durant’s infamous public spat with Green. The fact that the Warriors would always be Curry’s team regardless of how much ever he achieved was one of the major reasons for him wanting out.
In the biggest offseason move of recent times, KD signed with the Brooklyn Nets. That had former NBA champion Kyrie Irving and former league MVP James Harden join him as well.
Recently, former Clippers star Lou Williams stated that he had tried recruiting Durant to the Clippers. The former scoring champion was a perfect fit for the team, who had never won a championship in franchise history.
Lou Williams recently spoke about his bid to recruit Kevin Durant to the LA Clippers
Williams thought KD would fit perfectly in the team. The Clippers were a young team with the right coach in Doc Rivers.
Williams had the following to say on the No Chill with Gilbert Arenas podcast:
“We thought KD was going to give us what we needed, how we played, It’s an opportunity for guys like him to put another notch on the belt. There hasn’t been a championship in LA, as far as the Clippers go. You got guys that can come in and create their own, especially KD. Where everybody’s like, ‘Oh, he went there to get the rings. F*** that! Those are his rings.”
The LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors had met during the first round of the 2019 NBA Playoffs. The series had the Clippers win the first 2 games, which stunned everyone as the Clippers were considered a relatively young team with new faces when compared to a super team like the Warriors were.
During the series, Pattrick Beverly and Kevin Durant would be seen throwing shots at each other that even resulted in them being ejected once in a game. It would have been interesting to see if Durant would have joined the Clippers in that case
While Durant joined the Nets, the Clippers went on to sign two major NBA stars with the names of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.
Lou Williams was later traded to the Atlanta Hawks during the 2020-21 mid-season in exchange for NBA veteran Rajan Rondo.
