“I fell in the draft because everyone wondered who would I guard?”: Draymond Green talks about what pushed him to become a defensive champion
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green talks about defense and what motivated him to excel on the defensive end of the floor
When one thinks of the name Draymond Green, the first picture that comes to mind is a fierce defender. Draymond has been a force on the defensive end of the floor ever since his days back in Michigan State. Fast forward 9 years, his defense has gotten him the All-Star nod thrice and has gotten him three rings.
Having ended up third on the DPOY race this year, Draymond Green has one DPOY trophy to his name. His inclusion in Team USA was primarily because of his defense and his high basketball IQ. Coach Gregg Popovich himself talked about the same and complimented the Warriors’ forward and his knack for defense.
Draymond Green shares what directed his journey in the NBA
If you know Draymond Green, you know how things affect him. Back in 2012, Draymond Green was drafted at the 35th spot by the Warriors. According to a recent interview, Green talked about why he was dropped down on the Draft.
Green said,
“When I came into the league, I fell in the draft because their No. 1 question was what position would I guard,” Green said. “That stuck with me. And I wanted to make everyone eat those words. Every team that passed me, every reporter, everybody that is anybody who has said anything about my defense at that point. I wanted them to eat them words.”
Loved this response from Draymond Green on what motivated him to be a great defender:

He sure made them eat their words. Green is now a household name, who can guard 1 through 5, and anyone who watched the NBA can vouch for that. As long as Draymond Green is around, the defense would be no trouble for Team USA as well as the Golden State Warriors.
