“There’s probably more to come from Seb”– Aston Martin boss thinks Sebastian Vettel has more to offer to his team even after recent success.
After a rocky start with Aston Martin, Sebastian Vettel seems to find his ground in the team, as he scored in three out of the last five Grand Prix races.
He currently stands 10th in the drivers’ championship standings, 16 points clear of his teammate Lance Stroll and Aston Martin boss Otmar Szafnauer believes there is more to come from Vettel.
“Yeah, I mean, I think he’s 99 plus,” he said. “There’s probably more to come from Seb but he’s very comfortable, he’s working well with the team and working hard to get more performance out of the car, so we’re really happy with him.”
In the last race, Vettel’s race came to an unfortunate end, as Kimi Raikkonen’s reckless mistake made him get a DNF in the final lap of the race in Austria.
A few things changed things.
Aston Martin fetched its first podium of the year with Vettel’s success in Azerbaijan, and it indicated that the Silverstone based team could be a dark horse in the competition.
“I think it’s been a few things,” Szafnauer added. “Number one, if you remember back, we didn’t get much running in winter testing, we had some reliability issues, we had a driver change as well and Sebastian is getting more used to the car, he’s started scoring us points.”
“Some of the circuits that we went to also suited us a little bit better, and we’ve upgraded the car, so I think it’s a combination of all those things.”
Nevertheless, Aston Martin is not near to its 2020 self and requires more work to get to a competitive position, while McLaren, Ferrari and Alpine seem to progress this year.
