“What Magic Johnson didn’t do right”: When Lakers legend heartily laughed at his own failed talk show while promoting his 2021 Netflix documentary on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Many NBA fans may have heard of Magic Johnson as the greatest point guard in league history. Not many, however, will remember his talk show.

Earvin Magic Johnson was a man who seemed to spread happiness and joy wherever he went around him. Many basketball players consider him to be the greatest leader and the greatest winner of his time.

The man had an insanely competitive streak to him. As his opponent, you could never mistake his smile for anything other than a token of how badly he wanted to beat you.

That skill works out great on the basketball court, but it didn’t quite seep through to other aspects of Magic’s life. He’d particularly want to forget about one facet of it – his ill-advised decision to start a talk show.

Magic Johnson joked about his talk show being his worst decision ever on Jimmy Kimmel

Magic Johnson was on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this year to promote his upcoming documentary. He began this segment by speaking about how winning had impacted everything he’d done in life:

“Everything I wanted to do in life was to win – that’s all I wanted to do. And so when I look and think about my career, I’ve won championships from my 3rd grade all the way till now. I won every championship in Lansing, Michigan.”

Jimmy Kimmel instantly contrasted that with how he’d never won anything in sports himself. Kimmel then led Magic to talk about the Lakers legend’s deep-dive documentary, scheduled to be released this year.

“It’s going to cover all the way from growing up in Lansing, Michigan to now. People are gonna be shocked and it’s gonna be great – also, they’re going to hear from people I grew up with. And back in Lansing, Michigan, we’ve already interviewed them, also my family.”

“So it’s going to be really nice and then it will come all the way up to present day. As a businessman, being on your show. People are going to see so many different things that they’ve never seen before.”

Kimmel interrupted with an excellent joke question – just another in a long line of perfectly timed queries for comic timing: “Will your talk show be a part of it?” Magic let out yet another infectiously heart-warming laugh and quipped

“Yes, that’s the bad segment. That’ll be the segment ‘What Magic didn’t do right!’ I won’t ever make that mistake again.”
