“When LeBron James went to Miami, people made a huge cry about it”: Oscar Robertson calls out the NBA for having double standards
Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson calls out the NBA for its double standards when LeBron James joined the Miami Heat.
Veteran point guard Oscar Robertson recently appeared as a guest on the popular podcast The Knuckleheads. The Big O was his candid best, discussing his triple-double record, the Bucks winning the championship, and advocating for the players during his time.
Robertson has been an advocate for the players for several decades. The former MVP also spoke about the concepts of super teams in the current era of the NBA.
The former champion called out the NBA for its hypocrisy, especially when it came to LeBron James.
“When Boston got Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, that was David Stern’s deal and the NBA allowed that. Everything was fine. …But when LeBron went to Miami, ‘oh man, like how can you do this?!”

To date, many consider the formation of Big 3 in Miami as the root cause for the beginning of the super teams’ era. Lakers superstar LeBron James had been accused of being the pioneer of the movement.
However, it was the Boston Celtics who were responsible for starting the super-team trend in the NBA. The Big 3 of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen formed a juggernaut in 2008.
Oscar Robertson believes LeBron James was the victim of the league’s double standards
James was the biggest villain in the history of the NBA when he announced he would sign with the Miami Heat on 8th July 2010. What followed was a series of hate and scrutiny for the superstar.
The 4x NBA champion and Finals MVP was labeled as a traitor and called various names. There were clips of fans burning his jerseys and cursing the superstar for his decision.
However, James would win be back-to-back championships with the Heat franchise and be crowned Finals MVP in each case. Thus the best player on the super-team.
On the contrary, the Big 3 in Celtics never had a word of criticism spoken against them. Kevin Garnett had forced his way out of the Timberwolves organization to be a part of the Celtics. However, there wasn’t said much about that incident during the time.
Robertson definitely makes some valid points. The veteran point guard also took a shot at the late commissioner David Stern, who seemed to have no issues with the Celtics forming a Big 3.
