“Donovan Mitchell Knew He Was Locked In”: Kyrie Irving Channels His Inner LeBron James About Spida Breaking Franchise Record, NBA Twitter Reacts

Donovan Mitchell just did something historic. He scored 71 points, equaling David Robinson’s record and beating Devin Booker by 1 point.

He now stakes his claim in the category of most points scored in a single game. D-Mitch generated a mind-boggling 99 points in a single game in an overtime victory against the Bulls.

Last week, it was Luka Doncic who hit a last-second game-tying shot against the New York Knicks. Similarly, Spida intentionally missed an FT to then proceed and hit the game-tying shot. What 10 days in this season!

History-shattering records, excitement, and fanfare come with stories of how someone already knew it was going to happen. LeBron James, for example, “knew” Kobe Bryant was going to score 81 against Toronto. Or how he “knew” Migos were going to be the next best thing.

Kyrie Irving, a former Cavalier, and Bron’s tandem seem to have picked up the habit as well. Irving comes out after his incredible performance to say he already knew the Bulls were in trouble.

In a game of Call of Duty, he saw how “locked in” Donovan was, which immediately made him realize his scoring record as a Cavalier was in trouble. Both LeBron James and Kyrie Irving had 57 points as Cavaliers, a record that now looks paltry compared to the 71-point night.

Kyrie Irving said he and Donovan Mitchell were playing Call of Duty this afternoon and that he knew Mitchell was “locked in.” Said he’s happy Mitchell broke his Cavs record, and that records are meant to be broken.

Donovan Mitchell eclipses two incredible performances of the night with his display

A 43-point double-double from LeBron James or a 44-point midrange masterclass from DeMar DeRozan would have grabbed any headline. But when you drop a 71-point history-creating performance, you are bound to take the cover.

Donovan Mitchell, in just a short span, has gone from borderline star to certified superstar. The Cleveland backcourt of Darius Garland and Mitchell has been superb. The other half of the Utah Jazz’s ex-duo, Rudy Gobert, has been less than great.

The only player to have a negative +/- in their win, Gobert’s performances show why Spida was frustrated throughout his stint.
