ICC considering introducing a cap of one overseas T20 tournament per player
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering limiting players to participate in only one overseas T20 tournament given the large number of T20 leagues cropping up all around the world.
Think of Chris Gayle, think of Dwayne Bravo, think of Brendon McCullum – all these players keep playing throughout the year in various places all over the world. They get huge money for their services and are very popular among cricket fans all over the world.
However, this may change in the near future. The ICC is now contemplating of limiting the international players to playing only one overseas T20 tournament.
This would allow to regulate the number of increasing T20 leagues all over the world. Also, this would help to maintain a balance between International Cricket and T20 leagues.

From sometime, it is being noticed that players are preferring to play in T20 Leagues rather than international cricket. For example, most of the frontline West Indies players do not play for their national team any longer. Rather they prefer taking part in T20 leagues because of the big bucks that come with that.
However, things may change after ICC’s decision. Shedding light on the same, recently a BCCI official said, “It’s the first meeting (the ICC annual conference) but it’s ensuring that all of the domestic leagues popping up have minimum standards around governance/anti-corruption/paying players etc. Besides, the leagues don’t compromise players playing international cricket.
“They may also consider limiting the number of overseas leagues that players can play in but also ensuring that they’re appropriately rewarded for international cricket. A whole host of things to consider. But it will not have any impact on the BCCI or the IPL as the new rules will not be violative of the BCCI policy on T20 tournament.”
