McLaren drivers don’t want F1’s new points system

F1 is all set to have a new points system, one in which all 20 drivers(or at least 15) will be awarded points during a race, provided there is no DNF.

The F1 strategy group recently discussed bringing in a new points system, but the McLaren drivers feel that ‘securing points’ should be a privilege and shouldn’t be handed out to any and everyone who completes the race.

“I feel like it should be an achievement to score points.

“It shouldn’t be just points rewarded for everyone.” Vandoorne said.

Alonso too has voiced concerns for the same, saying that if everyone starts getting points, that ‘unique feeling’ about scoring points would go missing from the sport.

“I think Formula 1 has been always quite difficult to get points,” he said.

“Some elite guys take points and it was kind of a reward, a big moment when you score even two points or something.

“I remember when Jules [Bianchi] scored the ninth position in Monaco that was some kind of miracle, that was a big moment for the sport. If everyone scores points now maybe we lose that unique feeling in F1 that other categories they don’t have.

“Whatever they decide will be OK but definitely Formula 1 seems more likely to be more exclusive the points places.” he added.

Alonso also joked about whether the points scored would affect the cost of drivers’ super licences.

“If it affects the cost of the licenses it’s not good news!”

Now, you could look at the scenario from both perspectives. At first, it seems that points should infact be a privilege of sorts, but maybe the new points system could provide more motivation and solace to drivers that end up featuring in almost all races throughout the calendar and still miss out on scoring any points.
