“I Let My Family Down” : Bulldogs QB Stetson Bennett Finally Opens Up About His Public Intoxication Arrest

The Georgia Bulldogs have been consistently making the headlines as the NFL combine continues. First, it was Jalen Carter’s arrest. Then it was Nolan Smith absolutely smashing it on the workouts. Now, we once again visit an unpleasant incident involving a Bulldog. Georgia’s signal caller, Stetson Bennett, opened up about his arrest for public intoxication last month, during the combine’s media session.

The 25-year-old signal caller had a rough start to his college career. A walk-on at Georgia, he had to transfer out to Jones county after Justin Fields joined his team. One year later, he was back at Georgia playing second fiddle to Jake Fromm. However, that did not last long, as he was able to prove that he was just better than any QB they brought in. Also, he stayed healthy while the others fell to the injury plague.

Stetson Bennett addresses public intoxication arrest in the media session

The NFL media session is a thorough process. It aims to bring out the best and the worst in players when they are in front of the camera. Last time around, it was Nolan Smith who broke down talking about his deceased teammate Devin Willock. This time, it was Bennett who had to stand his ground as he was asked about his arrest in January.

“It was a mistake that everybody’s aware of,” Bennett said. “I understand why that can’t happen. I’ve talked to coaches about it and talked to GMs. I’ve apologized to my family. That’s who I felt worse about; I felt like I let them down because no matter where I go now [people are going to know about it]. Even without all this, I’ve got an obligation. You can’t do that if your last name is Bennett. I know better.”

Another rather uncomfortable moment came when he was questioned about him being glued to his phone during the Bulldogs’ victory parade. However, he seemed to have a perfect answer ready for this. He said, “You know people are entitled to their opinion. Yeah, I saw it as a parade for us who won, and I was playing music [for teammates] and trying to have a good time.”

“People took it as I was. . . I don’t really know what people took it [as], but they didn’t like it. I’m sorry about that, but I strictly just saw it as a chance for me, Sed [Sedrick Van Pran], and Chris [Smith] one last trip down Lumpkin on the way to Sanford together, and I just wanted to play the best tunes we could at that moment,” he adds.

Bennett could be a prime prospect for teams struggling with a lack of a QB

With a number of NFL franchises struggling to find a reliable QB, Stetson Bennett could turn out to be the solution. Though, it is impossible to ascertain how his history might affect a team’s decision, not that it should matter much. Bennett has shown himself to be a consistent signal caller, but reproducing that in the NFL is no small feat. Especially when he does not have the record books on his side.

Standing at 5ft 11 inches, Bennett is on the shorter end of the stick, along with the prospective #1 pick Bryce Young. The NFL has rarely been kind to short QBs, and more often than not they struggle to find their footing. However, these two youngsters can very well be the beginning of a new era in the NFL, one where short QBs are on equal footing with their taller counterparts. What does the future hold for these two?
